The problem of pain

“Over a sketch made idly to amuse a child, an artist may be content to let it go even though it is not exactly as he meant it to be. But over the great picture of his life- the work which he loves, though in a different fashion, as intensely as a man loves a woman or a mother a child- he will take endless trouble- and would, dountless, thereby give endless trouble to the picture if it were sentient. One can imagine a sentient picture, after being rubbed and scraped and recommenced for the tenth time, wishing that it were only a thumb-nail sketch whose making was over in a minute. In the same way, it is natural for us to wish that God has designed for us a less glorious and less arduous destiny ; but then we are wishing not for more love but for less”

Firstly I’m not religious, I stumbled across this book (The problem of pain) in my travels in New Zealand last year and have only just started reading it.

The book is mostly a christian mans justification for a world wrought with pain and evil.

The world his god created.

The man C.S. Lewis is not a theologist or a philosopher but only a good christian who questioned his faith not with adversity but with love.

It is a wonderful book and adresses the major issue atheists and christians alike have with religion.

That is; if god is so great, why do bad things happen?

20 pages in and the paragragh above spoke to me.

In an amazing spiritual sense, Lewis outlined life and destiny.

He outlined hardship and the ability to overcome.

To read this book as an agnostic atheist is eye opening to say the least and though I am not finished with it, currently I highly recommend it.

You have hardships because your destiny is not fulfilled, you are still being made!

Why the left should compromise with a UBI

How the Left can Compromise with a Universal Income.
Left wing politics has some some swell ideas about equality, but some are determined to shut down the idea of a universal basic income (UBI) on the terms that capitalism or crony capitalism could corrupt it.

This is jaded.

It’s not wrong in its fears but it is “jaded”.

The real scare here is if the right wing manages to take away all  the social benefits and services to pave way for the UBI. This is nasty, our social system would collapse under itself and debt would skyrocket.

We aren’t on our way to a magical land of a classless and stateless society, with a stagnating wage growth, higher power bills, high student fees and capitalism just running absolutely rampant it is only getting worse.

Let me get this straight, a UBI is a redistribution of wealth. It will be a sore point for many when we realize there will still be a class system. That is the way the world works, if you earn more then you are going to have more money to spend. The government isn’t going to take away earning rights.

The UBI is a good thing for the left and the right, why wouldn’t affluent businesses and land barons want their customers and serfs to have money to buy their goods and pay the rent.

If everyone can afford to pay for their food, water and shelter then everyone has the opportunity to move past class. Isn’t this what the left wants?

The idea of free money for everyone works; for everyone.

A UBI means we can literally skip the first two steps of Maslows Hierarchy of Needs. Meaning societycan move on to bigger and better things.

Martin Luther King said “The solution to poverty is to abolish it directly by a now widely discussed measure; The guaranteed income”

The fact is that we have people living on the streets and a UBI would give people the incentive and means to be more and live better.

Some people don’t help others because they are busy trying to provide for themselves, some people have to hold two full time jobs just to survive and some people literally can’t work. These people need a UBI.

Erik Olen Wright, a prominent sociologist and advocate for a UBI explained in an interview for KPFA that a basic income will help socially productive work such as caregivers, music and the arts thrive.

A single mother needs a basic income, A student needs a basic income and just imagine a world without the starving artist.

Many believe a UBI could cause inflation, but inflation only occurs when new money is printed or when the amount of currency is actually greater then the amounts purchasable in the economy.

So in short, A UBI won’t cause inflation.

In 2003, the Mexican government rolled out a food aid program and gave some villages the market value of food in a month in cash. The economists looking at these villages saw only a miniscule rise in the cost of food prices by 0.2%, not a statistically paramount change but the economists can’t say the cash wasn’t the cause.

Like I stated before a UBI is a redistribution of wealth. The very thing the left campaigns for.

Right now the waters are unclear and there are social tests going on all around the world, Australia just has to wait and see how successful these tests really are before implementing something like this.

Some of the hard left is against this because they really believe that we should slay the bourgeoisie and redistribute the wealth to the masses like some hardcore Robin Hood.

They are harmless though, what we should be scared of is the fact that an unconditional income might increase the number of bad poets in society

Trumps In Space

Donald Trump said he wants a new Military arm for space, are we expecting an alien invasion?

Probably not.

With the Air Force Space Command already up and running, it’s hard to see any reasoning behind this new rhetoric.

Every President since the cold war has announced some sort of space program, Trump is just saying -in one ridiculous foul swoop- exactly what his constituents want to hear, “more military spending” and “we’re going to the moon”.

Trump’s own defence secretary stated “You can emphasise more help for the military in space without going to the massive organisational change and expense.”

The countless communication, navigation, weather and reconnaissance satellites in orbit would be in absolute jeopardy if a ‘space war’ were to break out. Insane.

I am dumbfounded at the need to have battles on Earth let alone outside of the damn stratosphere.

Though space laser battles are super cool, I just don’t know how detrimental they are to our survival as a species.

What is seen as detrimental to the survival of our species though, is a dedicated space program.

Trump did sign one at the end of 2017 which outlines “an innovative and sustainable program of exploration with commercial and international partners to enable human expansion across the solar system and to bring back to Earth new knowledge and opportunities”

Presidents and space is about as old a concept as pigs in space, but Trumps new declaration is not another half-brained idea of his, because it is not his and it’s not half brained.

Mike Rogers, the Strategic Forces Subcommittee chairman proposed a space corps in 2017, this would “keep the United States ahead of rival nations like Russia and China”

Frankly, The United States needs to spend more money on space to stay in control. This is to ensure the continuance and reliability of important military and commercial information that the American space program is sending to earth.

The question the American government was really asking themselves is, How much money should we stake on space to stay ahead of our contenders without starting an arms race?

Trump, tactful and elegant, threw that idea out the window and stated that America will create the worlds first army dedicated to space.

It’s not a bad idea to be truthful, but as to form, this rhetoric was as brash as it was harmful.

My blood soaked heart is pumping beauty.
Love is endowed in my loins.
My shoulders hold up a volcano of emotion
My mouth is pursed meaning it’s full of coins that nobody wants
any meaning behind my back is stabbed slightly beside my spine.
And a dull ache sits above my brow as the devils own hand flips a coin against them.
every minute you can expect at least a slight with me.
Goodness wants me but the devil needs me.
Goodness wouldn’t pressure because goodness just is.
So easy to admire, and I am here wanting it all.
Between the quagmire of sin and lust and listlessness I am worried.
Only slightly but it is true.
My life without goodness is a life without you.

Every Second Counts

Every second counts
Mike wakes up and doesn’t give himself a second.
Brews a coffee and has a shower.
He walks around the house drying himself off and picking his clothes for the day.
He pushes the plunger down whilst taking only that moment to smell the coffee.
Before tainting it with cold water and downing it like a glass of water after a long day in the hot sun.
Every second counts.

And you all know that he’s not going to properly say goodbye to his house.
Empty cups except for their coffee stains, water on the floor and an overflowing bin.
A last minute sort of a guy.
Deadlines are his best friends because he spends most of his time thinking about them.
Every second counts.

Another moment where he can’t be bothered to take an extra second is when he reverses out of the driveway.
Not bothering with the three point turn ritual.
He likes the challenge anyway, or so he says.
He plays comedy on the way to work because he can’t be bothered to listen to it at home.
Surfing the web is the most important thing any member of society can do.
Hang ten bro.
Every second counts.

Thinking about a joke he enters work with a smile, he thinks people are happy to see him.
He doesn’t dare think otherwise because that’s a slippery slope and he’s probably been there.
He’s not entirely aware because he’s not entirely aware of his own thoughts and his own feelings.
They are just there and they will spring up out of that glazE mindset with sludge soaked hands.
Before he even had his cup of tea.
Every second counts.

He licked his girlfriends nipple this morning in some sort of game.
That was fun.
It was a fun lick.
Something about it made him realise how much he really did love her.
Every second counts.

Deftly appreciating life as even the sour, dull moments will harbour importance if he lets them anchor.
